One of the GEMS/Water (the inland water monitoring project of the Global Environment Monitoring System, which has been jointly promoted by UNEP and WHO since 1994) programs concerns quantification of pollutant loads (flux) discharged from land into the marine environment. However, at the moment, only discharges and concentrations are measured in the limited number of rivers in Japan that are participating in this program. Thus, since fiscal 1996,CGER/NIES has been developing a flux analysis method targeted on domestic rivers in order to propose a method that more accurately estimates pollutant loads. This study is conducted as Phase 4 of a 4-year research program. The following points can be stated from the analysis.-Water quality concentration is effected by river basin quality rather than scale.-In other words, pollutant load degree differs according to the relative levels of nature and human activities when a number of rivers are compared.-Such differences must be defined as being representative of the water quality concentration.-Discharge should be representative of the scale of the river basin. Ideally, a 'representative water quality concentration' is estimated per river by combining the population density, ratio of developed land and ratio of wooded land. The first two factors can be defined as causes of water deterioration while the last results in water purification. Next, the pollutant load will be estimated using the estimated water quality concentrations and discharges. The estimated pollutant load is compared with the actual pollutant load. However, this is the result of analysis targeted on 33 major Japanese rivers, so the conformity of each explanatory variable may differ according to the regional characteristics. Thus, what is described here is a method intended for estimating major Japanese rivers and explanatory variables must be reselected and reevaluated for application in the simple model. When applying the simple model to a region, the area must be limited so that regional characteristics are fairly similar. For example, simultaneous evaluation between the Japanese or other South East Asian islands whose rivers are very steep against the gentle ones in Europe should be avoided. |
