Since the introduction of quantitative analysis of stream morphology by Horton, (1945), considerable efforts have been devoted to the study of drainage networks, and ordering systems have been proposed to give a better quantitative description of natural stream networks. Three statistical laws, the law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths and the law of stream slopes were proposed by Horton. These three laws have been widely tested and accepted. The so-called "Horton analysis" has become a standard procedure for reporting the structural properties of channel networks although Horton's original ordering scheme has now been generally superseded by Strahler's modification. A significant number of relationships have been posed to describe the complex fashion in which hydraulic, hydrologic and geomorphic variables interact in channel networks. As yet, stream number data on the networks of seventh order have seldom been used to test and compare the accuracy of the Horton model. One of the purposes of this investigation is to examine the properties of channel networks. The results of the network analysis of the studied basin showed a good agreement with Horton's law. Secondly, the prevailing direction of stream courses of each order were examined and although there were no definite tendencies, the stream courses of each order show some dominant distributions in the ENE-WSW direction. |
