内容記述 The majority of school children in Japan have the image that South East Asian countries are Poor. Why do they hold such a negative image about them and where this image come from? These children seem to have developed this image by judging from the life of people in other countries-that is, from food, clothing and shelter. This paper reports on an attempt to use 'fish-soy sauce' in South East Asian countries as a teaching material to change Japanese school children s negative image into a good one, or at the very least be a first step in changing these fixed images. Why has the writer employed 'fish-soy sauce' as a teaching material? One reason is that 'fish-soy sauce' is the same seasoning as 'Shottsuru' found in Akita and 'Ishiri' in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The writer wanted Japanese school children to notice that South East Asians use the same kind of seasoning as Japanese, that they developed some of the same kinds of foods as their ancestors did, with the hope that this knowledge would arouse sympathy from Japanese school children with Thai people. Next, the wrier inuoduces the school children to a view point of 'necessity' in order to deepen their sympathy through a process of intercultral understanding. To let the school children themselves notice this 'necessity,' the writer further adds the view points of natural environment, clothing and shelter. As a result of this guidance the school children paid closer attention to the heat of East Asian countries, noticed the 'necessity' of preserving food, became interested in the food culture of Thailand and took a strong interest in the Thai way of life and thinking. They came to consider things from the Thai People's standpoint and rid themselves of their fixed negative images.
