This paper seeks to explain the recent economic developments which have caused environmental degradation in the Mekong basin of northeastern Thailand and southern Vietnam. Programs of \"sustainable development\" initiated by the United Nations during the 1980's, although defined as meeting the needs of the present without destroying resources for the future , have seriously damaged local environments due to their increased emphasis on commercial agricultural production for the world market. The cultivation of cassava for tapioca extraction has resulted in the deforestation of the Korat highland, and shrimp farming for the Japanese market has caused the loss of fertile mangrove areas in the Camau Peninsula.
